Hi all,

This week has been a distraction from normal activities.  I am doing my first 2391 at my local college and I believe it has gone well!

Remember, if you are looking at doing this, you need to know the basics…..

GS38

Basic and fault protection

Exposed and extraneous conductive parts

Difference between B, C and D breakers

Breaking capacities of fuses and breakers

Earthing systems and earthing terminology

The testing order (CRIPPER) That’s Continuity; Ring; Insulation res; Polarity Dead: Polarity live; Earth loop impedance/earth electrode res; RCD.

Thats enough to whet your appetite for now!  the practical exams  are tomorrow. I will keep you posted……

stop press….

I had a verification visit today (Thursday) while doing my practicals!  Everything went well!

I have had calls tonight from some of the lads saying the exam had gone well. However, there is now a 10 week wait for the results! I will keep you posted…..

Bye for now…..

Hi Al .

its Les again !…..I will start becoming a nuisance to you soon with these posts…He ! He !

..Just a bit of advice needed this time though.
I am NICEIC Approved Status and have been told I have to obtain 17th Ed Regs qualification by next year at the latest.[ Got 16th already .

I Would like to only do the one day update course as opposed to the longer full 3 or 4 days version…I have been told the deciding factor is to do with when I sat the 16th test.

Can you recommend Any Training centres in Liverpool area..I have had mailshot flyers from a few places , but as you are connected to that side of the business I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks in advance,

Les.

Hi Les,
You a nuisance? Never!
I cannot recommend any trainers over that way but your best bet is to go to my links and ask at talkelectrician net. that is a cracking, no-nonsense forum where everything electrical gets discussed in detail.
I would tend to go to colleges as it is cheaper, a lot of “training” outfits just do parrot fashion teaching to get you through, without really understanding the structure…..
My local college is Oldham, perhaps a bit far for you…..
Now to your question! If your cert says 2381-2001 or later then you are eligible to do the “1 day update” course. If you are before 2001 then you must do the full fat 3 day unit :(
Cheers
Alan

Only 8 weeks to go now!!!

Part-P Doctor August 29, 2009

Hi Glynn,
Only 8 weeks to go for your “pass” I feel! My maiden 2391 was a real pleasure, I really hope that you lot enjoyed (???) it and got something from it……

Glynn August 29, 2009

Hi Al,
Yes, it was a good course, as was the 17th edition you took me for. I was confident when I left the exam room that I had passed the theory side of things and I’m trying my best not to run any of the questions back through my head (it tends to put doubt in my mind about the answers I had wrote!).
Anyway, if I pass then I pass, if a pass is not on the cards for me this time then so be it………. there’s always the option of a re-sit.
As for the way you took us through the preperation for the exam, as every course you have taken me for so far – I dont feel I have learnt anything….. until the day before the exam when everything seems to come together, you must have some way of implanting answers into our brains without us knowing!!
A credit is due for your teaching methods anyway, but don’t forget, I can change my mind at any time.. results pending!
By the way, do you know what nights my level 3 are going to be yet??

Part-P Doctor August 30, 2009

Very kind words indeed young man!
I am sure it will all work out ok!
As to what night I am working next year, still don’t know, but will the week after next-I will keep you posted!

Hi Alan,

I attended a 17th update course you were running at the Oldham College in August just gone. You probably won’t remember but there were only two of us sitting the exam on the day. I’d also been out of work for a while and you where kind enough to offer me help! Anyway, I was wondering if you are going to be teaching the 2391 at Oldham in October, as I am due to be attending this course too.

Kind regards

Steve
PS. Nice site, and good luck with the second Part P Doctor.

Part-P Doctor September 14, 2009

Hi Steve,
Again, thanks for the kind words.
Yes I am doing the October and all 2391s at The Oldham College.
And for those who have an interest…..I am doing level 3 on Tuesday nights this year……..

Best wishes
Alan

Glynn October 8, 2009

Gutted AL,
Ah well, atleast I have 8 wks to get some revision in……..cya in Dec pal.

Part-P Doctor October 8, 2009

Hi Glynn,

I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, but there is more……

I have been doing 2391 and the like for 7 years now and am quite familiar with it all. When I tutor I get to know the victims over 3 days and can usually guess who is the “dead cert” candidates and those who may struggle…….but I have an announcement to make in cyberspace.
The course that you sat Glynn was a pleasure to run and I had six VERY strong candidates. I had counted on a 5 or 6 out of six, MINIMUM. I am aware that some do not do exams so well and am realistic in my expectations.
Today I spoke to my business manager and he told me some bad news. It is a first, a duck! In other words 6 out of 6 FAILS.
I said goodbye and put the phone down and started to think. I believe the results have been loaded wrong or the marker has been over zealous in marking down my candidates.
I phoned work back and explained my concerns, having NEVER has a duck in seven years.
We are contacting City and Guilds on Monday morning for an investigation.
I thank all for tuning in and will keep you posted, as always.

Best wishes
Alan

Hi AL,

Hows it gone?
Sorry to hear none of us where successful, I only spoke to one of the other candidates after the exam, he does all the testing for the company he works for all the time, and he was more confident that he had passed the exam than I was!
I can’t say I’m 100% sure that any of us achieved high enough marks to pass, all I can say is that a couple of us where very confident we had. However, silly mistakes can be made.
As the saying goes… s*** happens!
Let me know of any news as soon as you have any please.

Cheers,
Glynn.
